"Top Gun 3" Officially Announced: Tom Cruise and Gold-Standard Producer Team Up Again
Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed that "Top Gun 3" is in production, with series lead Tom Cruise returning. At the 2026 CinemaCon film industry convention, Paramount formally announced the news: "‘Top Gun 3’ is officially underway, with script development progressing smoothly, and Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer will team up once again."
"Top Gun 3" aims to continue the immense success of 2022's "Top Gun: Maverick," which successfully brought this classic film series to modern audiences. To maintain creative continuity, "Top Gun: Maverick" screenwriter Ehren Kruger will also return to pen the script for the third film, with specific plot details and the cast list currently remaining confidential.
After years of development, the newly announced sequel has finally been finalized, bringing back the core creative elements of the previous installments to the big screen. Tom Cruise will officially return to reprise his role as the legendary Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, continuing the character's central position in the high-flying aviation universe. In addition, renowned producer Jerry Bruckheimer, hailed as a gold-standard producer in Hollywood, will also return behind the scenes to continue injecting the series with its signature high-stakes elements.
"Top Gun: Maverick" was directed by Joe Kosinski, who also directed the Tom Cruise-starring film "Oblivion," and starred Miles Teller and Glen Powell. Last summer, Ellison specifically mentioned "Top Gun 3" as a top priority for Paramount Pictures when discussing his plans for the studio with the media, and stated that he would continue to work with Cruise as long as Cruise (with whom he has already collaborated on 10 films) was willing to tell a story with him.
