Google Says 75% of New Code is Now Generated by AI
Google reports that approximately 75% of new code within the company is currently generated by artificial intelligence, followed by review from human engineers. This proportion has steadily increased in recent years, reflecting Google's full-scale acceleration in deploying generative AI tools in the software development process.

According to data previously disclosed by Google, as of October 2024, about 25% of new code within the company was generated by AI; this figure had already risen to 50% last autumn. Now, increasing to 75%, demonstrates a significant increase in the importance of AI within Google's engineering system in just over a year.
Google has been pushing for wider use of AI tools by employees in coding and other office tasks. CEO Sundar Pichai stated in a blog post on Wednesday that the company is transitioning to "truly agentic workflows," allowing engineers to accomplish more tasks with the help of more autonomous AI agents.
Pichai cited a recent particularly complex code migration task, completed in collaboration between an AI agent and engineers, which took only one-sixth of the time it took engineers to complete independently a year ago. Google views such cases as a direct demonstration of the potential of AI agents in software engineering efficiency.
Currently, Google engineers primarily use the company's own Gemini model to generate code. Some employees have also been given specific AI usage targets, which will be included in this year's performance evaluations to further promote internal adoption of related tools.
Notably, some Google DeepMind employees were recently allowed to try Claude Code, launched by competitor Anthropic, a move that has also caused some tension and disagreement internally. Previous reports indicate that the choice between different tool camps has already caused some discussion and friction within teams.
Google is not the only tech giant to significantly introduce AI coding. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated in April last year that 20% to 30% of the code in some of the company's projects was already written by AI. Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott even predicted in the same month that 95% of the code will be generated by AI within the next five years.
Social media companies are also following a similar trend. According to a report citing an internal document, as of the fourth quarter of 2025, Meta has set a target for software engineers in some organizations: 55% of code changes should be "Agent-Assisted." According to the document, for the first half of 2026, 65% of engineers in the company's creation-related organizations are required to use AI to write more than 75% of the submitted code.
Snap also stated earlier this month that at least 65% of new code is generated by AI under its new operating model. As Google, Microsoft, Meta, Snap and other large tech companies continue to increase the proportion of AI coding tools used, AI is rapidly evolving from an "assistive tool" to an indispensable infrastructure in the software development process.
