AMD FSR 4 Remains Locked to RDNA 4 a Year After Release, Former Lead Responds with an Emoji
AMD's former FSR development lead, Colin Riley, recently responded to a frequently asked question on social media – why doesn't FSR4 yet support older RDNA2 and RDNA3 architecture GPUs? His response wasn't an official statement, but an emoji saying: "I better not speak, it will cause big trouble."
FSR 4 has been available for over a year since its release with the RDNA 4 architecture RX 9000 series graphics cards, and users with older cards have been waiting for official support, but AMD has consistently failed to provide a clear answer.
In fact, INT8 version DLL files for FSR 4 targeting RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 architectures already exist, and there are no technical compatibility issues.
Currently, third-party tools like OptiScaler have successfully enabled FSR 4 on the RX 6000/7000 series, and testing shows that FSR 4.0's Balanced mode even outperforms FSR 3.1's Quality mode in terms of image clarity and ghosting/flickering reduction.
Furthermore, FSR 4.1 has also been successfully ported to RDNA 3 graphics cards by players using similar methods, with results comparable to the native RDNA 4 platform.
