Shanghai Metro Experiences Two Charging Treasure Fires in 48 Hours, Passengers Unaware of Details
Two near-miss incidents involving self-igniting charging treasures occurred on the Shanghai Metro within 48 hours. Fortunately, staff responded promptly, and no one was injured. However, both passengers involved stated they were unaware of the charging treasures' origin, brand, or compliance, highlighting significant safety concerns.

On the afternoon of April 16th, a male passenger on Line 9 at Dapu Bridge Station experienced white smoke emanating from his backpack while riding an escalator. Upon arriving at the station hall and checking, it was confirmed that the charging treasure in his bag had spontaneously combusted. Staff quickly evacuated passengers and used a fire extinguisher to resolve the danger.
The passenger stated that the charging treasure was a gift from a trade show three years ago, and he no longer remembers the brand or manufacturer, nor whether it meets safety standards.
Just one day later, on the morning of April 18th, a female passenger's bag suddenly caught fire at Jiangsu Road Station on Line 11. She quickly emptied the contents and discovered the source of the fire was also a charging treasure.
Station staff quickly arrived to handle the situation, and the scene quickly returned to normal. This passenger’s charging treasure was borrowed from a classmate, and she also had no knowledge of the brand, capacity, or compliance.
Both incidents occurred in crowded subway cars and platforms. If the fire had spread, the consequences would have been disastrous.
The fire department has once again reminded everyone to purchase charging treasures through official channels, look for 3C certification, and avoid using products with no markings, unknown gifts, and to avoid squeezing, exposure to sunlight, and overcharging. If the charging treasure becomes swollen, hot, or emits an odor, stop using it immediately and eliminate mobile safety hazards around you.
