Most Vehicles at Beijing Auto Show Use Mechanical Door Handles, Fully Hidden Designs Significantly Reduced
A notable trend at the ongoing 2026 Beijing International Auto Show is the quiet retreat of once-popular fully hidden door handles, with mechanical and semi-hidden designs making a large-scale comeback. Most new models on display are no longer blindly pursuing minimalist hidden effects. This shift is not a coincidental change in aesthetic trends, but stems from the latest national automotive safety standards and mandatory requirements.

On February 2nd of this year, the mandatory national standard "Safety Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handles" was officially released. The standard explicitly prohibits purely fully hidden door handle designs, aiming to address the extreme safety hazard of door handles failing to pop out after a vehicle accident, hindering rescue efforts.
According to the implementation schedule of the new regulations, the requirements will be implemented for newly developed models from January 2027 to January 2028. By January 2029, all production models, including existing facelifted models, must comply with this safety standard.
Many insiders from various car companies at the auto show said that while hidden door handles can reduce minor wind resistance and enhance the sense of technology, safety must take precedence. Currently, major manufacturers have initiated design adjustments for subsequent models, gradually phasing out fully hidden solutions.
Future automotive design will focus more on balancing practicality and safety. Semi-hidden door handles, which retain a certain degree of low wind resistance while providing a reliable mechanical physical opening method in emergencies, are gradually becoming the mainstream direction for automotive research and development.
The introduction of this standard marks a shift in the domestic automotive industry from excessively pursuing technological premium to returning to a people-oriented safety baseline. Consumers will also have more design options that balance aesthetics and emergency reliability when making future car purchase choices.
