Valve Confirms Steam Deck 2 is Under Development, Release Still Distant
Following the announcement of the new Steam Controller's pricing and release date, players inquired about the Steam Machine and the next-generation handheld, Steam Deck 2. Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais recently responded in an interview with IGN, stating that the development of Steam Deck 2 is actively underway within Valve, but neither he nor the company can provide more specific information or a release timeframe. He indicated that the new handheld will…

Previously, Valve publicly stated that if they were to launch Steam Deck 2, its performance must represent a “significant leap” over the existing Steam Deck, otherwise they would not easily update the product line. Based on this premise, the industry generally expects that Valve will likely wait for architectures such as RDNA 4 or even RDNA 5 to reach a more suitable level in terms of power efficiency, performance, and cost before integrating them into an APU, in order to avoid a significant impact on battery life. At that time, the market competition faced by Steam Deck 2 will also be more intense, especially from potential new handheld products from manufacturers such as Sony.
Rumors surrounding Steam Deck 2 continue to ferment. Reports suggest that the next-generation product may no longer use a semi-custom AMD APU tailored for it, but instead switch to using off-the-shelf AMD standard chips, and is also aiming for a release around 2028, roughly consistent with the lifecycle of the original Steam Deck. This strategy is believed to give Valve greater flexibility in supply chain and product planning, allowing it to adjust its hardware configuration and product plans based on market environment changes and mid-term CPU update cycles.
Regarding the positioning and evolution of Steam Deck 2, Griffais believes that a “straight line” can be drawn from Valve’s hardware projects over the years: from the earliest Steam Controller and Steam Machine, all the way to Steam Deck, and then to the various new hardware products announced and released this year. He emphasized that Steam Deck 2 will also continue this lineage, continuously accumulating and ultimately reflecting the experience and lessons learned from Valve’s existing and upcoming hardware products in the new generation handheld.
