Lenovo Group Announces Completion of Phoenix Firmware Business Acquisition
Lenovo Group officially announced the completion of its acquisition of Phoenix Technologies' firmware technology business, fully obtaining related intellectual property, technical assets, and core R&D teams. Following this acquisition, Lenovo will fully internalize its firmware R&D capabilities, building an independent and controllable technical foundation for AIPC, AI servers, and edge-side intelligent devices.
It is understood that Phoenix Technologies is a long-standing technology company in the PC industry chain, with a long history in the firmware field, and its technology has been widely used by mainstream PC brands worldwide. Phoenix Technologies has long provided BIOS solutions for Lenovo's ThinkPad series, possessing mature engineering capabilities, a continuous innovation system, and deep cooperative relationships with global mainstream chip manufacturers.
Firmware, as the underlying program for the startup and operation of computing devices, undertakes critical responsibilities such as hardware initialization, system wake-up, security verification, and operating system loading. It is an important basic software layer for PCs, workstations, and servers. Against the backdrop of rapid evolution of AI terminals, device forms are extending from traditional PCs to AI PCs, edge terminals, intelligent workstations, and enterprise-level AI infrastructure, and the importance of underlying firmware is simultaneously increasing.
Luca Rossi, President of Lenovo Group's Intelligent Devices Group, said: "This transaction is a strategic step for Lenovo. Self-developed firmware will strengthen core engineering capabilities, better control key links at the computing bottom layer, accelerate innovation, enhance security, deepen vertical integration, and achieve significant cost optimization. Phoenix Technologies has a profound foundation in the firmware field, and its unique technical capabilities will further enhance Lenovo's product matrix."
