Gemini Now Directly Generates and Exports Microsoft Office Files During Chat
Google recently added the ability to directly generate and export downloadable files within the Gemini chat interface, filling a significant gap in its productivity tool capabilities. Previously, Gemini users often had to copy and paste responses into other applications for formatting, while leading AI assistants like Microsoft 365 Copilot and ChatGPT could directly generate documents in chat. This update moves Gemini further from being a mere "answering tool" towards a "productivity hub."

According to information released by Google, Gemini can now generate various commonly used file formats with one click during conversations, including Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PDFs, Markdown, and native Google Docs and Slides. It also supports direct download or saving to Google Drive. Google CEO Sundar Pichai also announced on social media that users can simply issue instructions in the chat to create Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, and other files, eliminating the need for copy-pasting and manual formatting. This feature is now available to all Gemini app users worldwide.
In terms of supported file types, Gemini covers multiple categories including documents, spreadsheets, and technical formats. For documents, this includes Google Docs, Google Slides, Microsoft Word (.docx), PDF, plain text (TXT), and rich text format (RTF). For spreadsheets, it supports Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel (.xlsx), and CSV files. For developers and technical users, formats include LaTeX and Markdown (.md), facilitating the generation of technical documentation, academic writing, and code-related explanations.
To use the feature, users can directly enter natural language instructions in the Gemini chat, such as "create a proposal document" or "draft a project WBS task list." Gemini will first generate the corresponding content in the chat. Once the response is generated, users simply click the export option to download the file to their local device or save it directly to a corresponding location in Google Drive. Additionally, users can take or upload images of handwritten notes, allowing Gemini to recognize and organize them into a PDF file, eliminating the need for manual entry and formatting.
Google states that this capability will be rolled out to all users of the Gemini app, including enterprise Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and ordinary users who log in to the Gemini app with personal Google accounts. With the ability to directly generate and export files in place, Gemini's competitiveness in the AI assistant productivity race has been significantly enhanced, and it is poised to become a powerful auxiliary entry point in addition to traditional Office suites.
