Google DeepMind Employees Initiate Union Formation to Oppose AI Military Contracts and Cooperation with Israel
Employees at Google's AI company DeepMind, based in London, have recently initiated action to form a union, aiming to prevent the company's technology from being used in projects related to the Israeli military and the US armed forces. On Tuesday, employees sent a letter to Google management requesting the company recognize the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and UnitetheUnion as joint representative bodies, with 98% of CWU members within DeepMind voting in favor of unionization.

An unnamed DeepMind employee stated in a CWU-released statement that they do not want their AI models to "become complicit in acts that violate international law," but these technologies "are already assisting in the genocide of Palestinians by Israel." He pointed out that even if management repeatedly emphasizes that these systems are "only used for administrative purposes," they are still "helping to make genocide cheaper, faster, and more efficient," and called for this to stop immediately, as well as ending harm to Iranians and lives around the world.
If this unionization effort is successful, at least approximately 1,000 DeepMind employees working at the London headquarters will gain union representation. Company management currently has 10 working days to voluntarily recognize this unionization effort; otherwise, employees will formally initiate legal proceedings to compel the company to grant recognition.
The union organizers have put forward specific demands, requesting that Google make a clear commitment not to develop or undertake weapons, technologies, or contracts "used to harm or monitor populations." Employees also hope to negotiate on AI applications that "substantially affect their job responsibilities, workload, or job security," and assert the right of employees to refuse to participate in any project that violates their "personal moral or ethical standards."
